Carlsberg Group entered India in May 2006 by incorporating a company named South Asia Breweries Pvt. Ltd. The name changed to Carlsberg India Private Limited in February 2009 to reflect the company as a part of the Carlsberg Group.
Carlsberg India’s commercial operations started in June 2007 at the Paonta Sahib brewery in Himachal Pradesh, with the launch of Carlsberg Green in the premium-beer segment.
Carlsberg India expanded its operations by establishing Breweries in Alwar, Rajasthan in March 2008 and in Aurangabad, Maharashtra in August 2008. Since then, a total of 7 Breweries have been set up, which re-emphasizes the Carlsberg Group's strategic focus on India.
Keeping up pace with the brewery openings was the market expansion from 5 markets in 2007 to 24 markets in 2008 to 31 markets (including Union Territories) to date.
Carlsberg India became the #3 player in the Indian beer market within 6 years of operations and continues to hold the position to date. To add to this, Tuborg is the #2 beer brand and the #1 international beer brand in the country.
