Carlsberg Denmark has just signed a significant Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the renewable energy company Better Energy, which secures new green power generation in the form of a solar farm of more than 70 hectares, equivalent to approximately 105 football fields, which is expected to be completed and operational in 2024.

Carlsberg's new PPA contributes progress on two targets under the brewer's ambitious new ESG programme, Together Towards ZERO and Beyond (TTZAB):

• By 2030, all electricity must come from renewable sources that contribute new green power to the grid - for example through self-generation or long-term PPAs.
• By 2030, all breweries must be carbon neutral.

The new green power will be used at the brewery in Fredericia, and Peter Haahr Nielsen, Managing Director of Carlsberg Denmark, welcomes the cooperation through which Carlsberg will purchase 29 GWh from the solar farm per year over a ten-year period:

"At Carlsberg, we have already taken several steps towards greening our operations, but we can do more and we are ambitious. And that's why we're delighted to seal this new agreement between Carlsberg and Better Energy, where the new green power produced will be equivalent to more than 46,000 Danes' average annual electricity consumption. "

Agreement with direct effect on the green transition

Businesses can make a direct difference by buying new, green and subsidy-free energy that reduces CO₂ emissions while having a tangible effect on the amount of green power on the grid. Better Energy welcomes the new partnership to accelerate positive change:

For Carlsberg in Denmark, the agreement represents an important milestone in its ESG programme:

"The new PPA supports our new sustainability programme, Together Towards ZERO and Beyond, where we have enhanced our already ambitious targets and added new ones. In addition, we are pleased to contribute to the green power transition in Denmark by adding more green power to the Danish grid," says Peter Haahr Nielsen.

The solar park is scheduled to be connected to the grid in 2024. Better Energy owns and is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the future park.

Carlsberg's new water reclamation plant, which has made the brewery one of the world's most water-efficient breweries, also reduces the brewery's energy consumption by 10 percent through the production of biogas as a waste product and the recirculation of hot water.
