We now use 3.1 hectolitres (hl) of water to brew one litre of beer, compared to 3.4hl/hl in 2015. Our ambitious 2030 target is 1.7hl/hl.
Our Chinese breweries have reduced water use through diligent housekeeping and careful monitoring. Their success demonstrates that improving water efficiency doesn’t always require radical change.
In 2016, two stellar performers in China actually used less than 3 hl/hl: the Carlsberg Brewery Guangdong (Huizhou), and the Urumqi No. 2 Brewery.
